Study In Canada

Study In Canada

International students (study permit)

International students (study permit)

All foreign nationals require written authorization (a study permit) in order to study in Canada unless exempted. Foreign nationals are required to obtain a study permit for engaging in academic, professional, vocational or other education or training that is more than 6 months in duration at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.

The following activities are not considered studies for the purposes of the IRP Act and do not require a study permit:

  • pre-school (pre-kindergarten)
  • courses of general interest or self-improvement
  • distance learning
  • audited courses (typically by sitting in on an academic course, but without obtaining credit)

Your study permit is not a visa. It alone doesn't allow you to enter Canada. You may also need a temporary resident visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).

People who don't need a permit to study in Canada

Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada. The exceptions are:

  1. Short-term studies (six months or less): You can study at any school in Canada without a study permit if :
  2. Family or staff of foreign representatives
  3. Members of foreign armed forces
  4. Minor children in Canada: Minor children don't need a study permit if they :

  • are in kindergarten or are refugees or refugee claimants
  • have parents who are refugees or refugee claimants or
  • want to go to pre-school, primary or secondary school, and are already in Canada with a parent who is allowed to work or study in Canada.

Work while studying on campus or off-campus

You can work while you have a valid status as a full-time student either on campus or off-campus without a work permit. You will need a SIN number to work as a student.

You can work for a 24-hour-per-week off-campus work limit.

Who can't work while being a student in Canada

You can't work off campus without a work permit if any of these situations apply to you:

  • your study permit says you aren't authorized to work off campus while you study
  • you're only enrolled in an English or French as a second language (ESL/FSL) program
  • you're only taking general interest courses
  • you're only taking courses required to be accepted into a full-time program
  • your situation changes and you no longer meet all of the requirements to work off campus

If any of these situations apply to you, and you want to work while studying in Canada, you need to apply for a work permit.

Work after you graduate - Post Graduate work permit (PGWP)

You may work in Canada on an open work permit if you are eligible to apply for PGWP. Length of your work permit depends on the length of your study and applicable guidelines under PGWP program.

Qualifying for PR under Canadian Experience Class (Express Entry)

When you are on a valid post graduate work permit, if you work in jobs that are classified as NOC level O, A or B for at least 12 months period (must be full time paid jobs or equivalent part time paid jobs), you may qualify to apply under Canadian Experience Class for permanent residence as part of Express Entry program.

Any work done in NOC code C or D, Voluntary work or self-employment work, work done on study permit does not count as qualifying work for the purpose of Canadian Experience Class.
