All foreign nationals require written authorization (a study permit) in order to study in Canada unless exempted. Foreign nationals are required to obtain a study permit for engaging in academic, professional, vocational or other education or training that is more than 6 months in duration at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.
The following activities are not considered studies for the purposes of the IRP Act and do not require a study permit:
Your study permit is not a visa. It alone doesn't allow you to enter Canada. You may also need a temporary resident visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
You can work while you have a valid status as a full-time student either on campus or off-campus without a work permit. You will need a SIN number to work as a student.
You can work for a 24-hour-per-week off-campus work limit.
You can't work off campus without a work permit if any of these situations apply to you:
If any of these situations apply to you, and you want to work while studying in Canada, you need to apply for a work permit.
You may work in Canada on an open work permit if you are eligible to apply for PGWP. Length of your work permit depends on the length of your study and applicable guidelines under PGWP program.
When you are on a valid post graduate work permit, if you work in jobs that are classified as NOC level O, A or B for at least 12 months period (must be full time paid jobs or equivalent part time paid jobs), you may qualify to apply under Canadian Experience Class for permanent residence as part of Express Entry program.
Any work done in NOC code C or D, Voluntary work or self-employment work, work done on study permit does not count as qualifying work for the purpose of Canadian Experience Class.
